(Even after spending HUNDREDS of hours writing music!)
If there were a way to write the music you *really* want to be writing, but without the self-doubt, without the “what the heck do I do next” in the middle of every composition, or without feeling afraid to put yourself out there…
Would you finally feel empowered to pursue your musical dreams with confidence?
Here’s What’s Blocking Your Flow As A Composer:
LET’S PAINT THE PICTURE:
Maybe you obsessively listen to Radiohead or the soundtrack of Final Fantasy on repeat as if it’s about to disappear for good…
…compulsively study every square inch of
your favorite Mahler, Monk, and Metallica…
…or maybe you’re a bedroom producer extraordinaire cranking out digital music into the wee hours of the night.
You’ve got a nonstop onslaught of great ideas bouncing around in your head.
But when you crack open your laptop or a fresh sheet of staff paper to bring those ideas to life, all the sudden expressing those ideas on paper feels like… well… pulling teeth.

If you know without a doubt that you have brilliant music locked away in your head, but sometimes you just can’t bring to life… then keep reading.
You’re a budding composer passionate about your craft, and you SHOULD be equipped with the tools to express your ideas in software (or on paper) with ease.
The 5 Reasons You’re Feeling Stuck As A Composer:
(and how to bust out of it!)
Ever completed a piece and asked yourself, “wait, is this actually any good?”
We get it — when you’ve listened to your work 1,587 times, it’s hard to see it clearly.
As a result, you’re probably lacking confidence in your work, or not knowing exactly what to do to improve your writing.
The best antidote?
Community! Most of us are introverts (and we love it that way!). But having peers and mentors who geek about the same stuff you geek about is the fast track to growing your skills and confidence.
Let me guess. When you first started writing music, it was nothing but sunshine and rainbows. But the funny thing about “getting better” at writing music is that, well, your standards get higher! If you’re anything like the rest of us, you become more aware of how you *really* want your music to sound.
Your goals get bigger and bigger (because, you know, you know you have MAD potential!).
The result? Sometimes you just expect yourself to be perfect right out of the gate.
Sound familiar?
Now, of course striving for excellence is always the move. But when you’ve been stuck on measure 12 of your piece for MONTHS because you can’t find the *perfect* next move — that’s where things go wrong.
So, what’s the goal then? Glad you asked:
To bust through perfectionistic tendencies and embrace the highs and lows of the learning journey we all share.
Okay okay, let’s be real for a second:
Sometimes we attach what people “might think” of our work to our value and potential as a composer…
Sounds a bit goofy when we way it out loud, but we all go through this at one time or another.
Fear of criticism can be paralyzing, and it might just be keeping you from embracing opportunities to grow your skills.
But here’s the fact of the matter:
Being bold and sharing your work with the world, your peers, and with the pros eager to support you is quite simply the fastest way to improve your skills.
Listen, there’s an oh-so common misconception that creativity is a fixed trait — that you either have “it” or you don’t.
You’ve probably felt this pressure before.
Pressure that maybe you started too late, you haven’t grown “fast enough,” or that a “real” composer would never feel stuck at times (not true, btw!).
You’ve probably had times where you felt like your ideas were stale or unoriginal, and maybe you’ve questioned yourself.
Can we let you in on a little secret?
That’s just called being human — sh*t isn’t always perfect. Creativity is a skill and a muscle that can be exercised.
You’ve got a mountain of creative ideas up in your head, and it’s just a matter of learning to let it all out (hint hint, we’re here to help you with that!).
Sound obvious?
Sure, we get that.
But if you’re mostly self-taught or have never received guidance from professional composers, you might just be surprised at… well… what you don’t know!
You pick things up here and there from YouTube, friends, that random thing you saw on the internet. You try and figure out what is going on in the music that you love. You might even be looking at scores to try and figure out how the composer could have possibly gotten that out of their head!
We’re here to give you the tools to understand what you’re hearing, and translate your ideas to music.
Growing your skills as a composer and learning to pull those ideas from your head and onto paper is now easier than ever.
With all the hours and energy you put into your music, you deserve to have the tools and support to approach your writing with confidence!
Ready to become the composer you know you’re capable of being? It’s right around the corner…
…but it does depend on having a crystal clear path laid in front of you, the support and guidance of professionals, and the motivation and accountability of being a part of a community.
Learning & community that’ll skyrocket you to the next level in your composing journey.
Approach your writing with confidence by being a part of a supportive (and serious) community dedicated to learning & creating with excellence & ease.
Receive live feedback on your music from Susie, Nate, or a special guest artist. Studio classes happen every week except when there are special live events.
At the time of writing there are thirteen courses in the Academy, but refresh the page and there might be another one—every month we add new members-only content.
The forums are filled with like-minded people you’ll get to know and grow alongside.
The Academy is a central access point for our private studio, and for workshops that give you an opportunity to work with live professional musicians.
Beginner to early-advanced composers who want to ‘up’ their skills in music writing, get customized feedback on their work from professionals, and be a part of a supportive community of like-minded musicians.
Synthase Composers Academy is for anyone ages 13+ who:
If you’re at least 13 years old and you’re an aspiring composer, then yes!
No—we’ve gone out of our way to make sure beginners have a path to learning within the Academy.
No problem—many of our resources are not notation dependent.
If you’re at a stage where you don’t feel like feedback on your work is very helpful, the Academy might not be for you. But even if you’re comfortable with many techniques of composition, you’ll likely encounter new approaches in the Academy.
Given that you need to be good at composing to make money as a composer, yes. We don’t currently have a focus on business-related topics, but those discussions are certainly welcome in the forums.
No—content is only available to current members.
You can do so at any time from the “billing” section of your account.
Yes, anytime!
Maybe you’re reading this thinking:
“But, I’m not trying to have a career in writing music… it’s just my happy place”
Being a part of our Academy is not about landing a prestigious career as a composer. It’s not about going viral, and it’s definitely not a competition.
This is about YOUR time, YOUR music; it’s about YOU.
By the way…
If you are looking to become a professional composer but you’re in the early stages, you’re definitely in the right place! We’ve helped students get into prestigious music programs and lay the foundation for future endeavors. PLUS, by being a part of the Academy, you’ll get exclusive discounts on private lessons and workshops. So yeah, you’re in the right place!
We’re composers, keyboardists, and educators with international performances, awards, and doctorates in composition from Yale and Duke. Other than that, we’re pretty different:
Nate grew up in West Virginia and studied jazz before playing in bands, scoring a feature documentary (seen on PBS), and integrating electronic and acoustic music.
Susie (Huijuan) grew up in Hunan province in China, attended Shanghai Conservatory from the age of twelve, and went on to an award-winning career of solo, chamber, and orchestral music.
We have a passion for helping young (and not so young!) composers build their skillset and compose with confidence.
We can’t wait to meet you inside the Academy!
~ Nate & Susie
